Since long before the European Union (EU) and even the existence of some European countries, Spain and Latin America have held a very close-knit bond. During the colonial era, explorers like Christopher Columbus and the conquistadores—such as Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro—brought Spanish rule to vast portions of the South American continent. These early European arrivals shaped the course of history in both Spain and Latin America.
